Miart 2014 was a large scale international art fair. Set up with the normal streets of booths in a commercial/industrial setting. There was a really good mix of international gallerias with lots of interesting Italian spaces being represnted. The Brand New Gallery from Milano was showing a work from Jackie Saccoccio. The large scale abstract painting had competing layers of energetic paint which made it stand out for me. These are aspects that were also strong in the monograph of Paul Jenkins’ work.
One of the best set of works at Miart was by Maria Lai with Nuova Galleria Morone, Milano. Most of the pieces shown used sewn text on canvas and in books. The text is unreadable and emotive. Her style means that text start to become abstract lines and take on new formal equalities.
